Part of caring for patients includes investing in the newest technologies and bringing the benefits of medical research to the community. This commitment is exactly why West Houston Medical Center brought the Gamma Knife technology home. It is an advanced neurosurgical tool for treating brain disorders.
What is Gamma Knife?
Gamma Knife is not a knife in the traditional sense because the physician does not use a scalpel and does not make any incision. Instead, precisely focused beams of radiation are directed to the treatment area in the brain, minimizing the effects on the surrounding healthy tissue. Because general anesthesia is not needed during a Gamma Knife procedure, recovery is relatively quick and painless. Most patients are able to resume normal activities in 24 to 48 hours.
